Kapil Chopra, MD

Baloys was founded by Dr. Kapil Chopra (Kaps) — a board‑certified psychiatrist, addiction medicine specialist, yoga teacher, Ayurvedic health counselor, and death doula whose life has been shaped by a single, persistent question: What is the truth of who we are beneath our suffering?

Even in his early years, Kapil felt a quiet pull toward Yoga, philosophy, and the deeper meaning of our existence. That inclination lived in the background as he pursued medicine, training as a physician in India before completing his psychiatry residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He went on to practice across California, Washington State, and Virginia, spending more than a decade in community mental health and addiction work.

Kapil’s professional life unfolded far from traditional offices. He spent years as a street psychiatrist in San Mateo County, meeting people where they were — under freeways, in encampments, on sidewalks, in cars, in moments of crisis and moments of quiet. He offered medication support, counseling, crisis intervention, and help navigating housing and addiction treatment.

His service extended into primary care clinics, older‑adult and community mental health programs, developmental disability services, correctional facilities, nursing homes, and forensic psychiatric units — places where the human mind reveals both its complexity and its tenderness. Sitting with thousands of stories taught him what no textbook could: beneath all the defenses, adaptations, and inherited wounds, something whole and luminous remains.

A health crisis later in life rekindled the spiritual curiosity that had been present since childhood. What began as a collapse became a doorway — a return to the questions he had carried since he was young. This period of profound inner reconstruction led him deeper into Yoga, Ayurveda, and death‑doula work, not as concepts but as lived, embodied pathways. These traditions didn’t replace his medical training; they expanded it, teaching him to listen differently, to see the body as a landscape of intelligence, and to honor the cycles of life with reverence rather than fear.

Today, Kapil brings the rigor of his medical training, the groundedness of his community work, and the spaciousness of the wisdom traditions he has studied to create offerings that are compassionate, embodied, and real. His intention is simple and steady: to offer a way of seeing and being that helps people reconnect with their inherent wholeness.
